Boys & Girls Club of the South Coast Area
The Boys & Girls Club of the South Coast Area is located in the heart of San Clemente and is a hotbed for youth activity. The Club is equipped with game rooms, classrooms, an art studio, two technology labs, a teen center, two gymnasiums, a playground, ball field and outdoor courts, all of which offer tremendous after-school and vacation programming opportunities for school-aged children in grades 1-12.
Activities are led by Youth Development Professionals who are trained and taught to stress Academic Success, Character & Leadership Development and Healthy Lifestyles. A typical day at the Club could see 200 – 250 children completing homework assignments, attending an art class, playing ball, using the computers to do research or an enrichment activity, having a snack and interacting with their peers.
Throughout the year, the Club also hosts youth sports leagues in Volleyball, Basketball, Indoor Soccer and Baseball. The leagues are typically recreational in nature and allow the participants to enjoy the games without the added pressure of try-outs and having to perform at top levels to make the teams. There is room for everyone and more than 1,000 children participate in the fall, winter and spring leagues.
One of the Clubs signature programs is the Mark Schmitt College Bound Program which helps Club members get on a path to graduate and attend college. Many of our participants will be first-generation college students in their families. Additional weekly programs include Drama, SMART Girls, Youth Leadership Clubs, Triple Play, Brain Gain, Lego’s and Tech programs.
The Boys & Girls Club is governed by a group of volunteer Board of Directors who work closely with the staff and the community to ensure we have the necessary resources to operate effectively. They remain committed to keeping the fees affordable to all and never want fees to be a barrier for participation. We are very excited about our new CEO this year, Terry Hughes. Terry is working to expand Community Leadership and Youth Programs and hopes to start weekend recreational sports leagues.
Each year at the annual Gala fundraiser, we honor a Youth of the Year. Last year we honored Mike Peters, San Clemente’s Chief of Police, an alumni of the Boys & Girls Club of the South Coast Area.
This year the 36th Annual Masquerade Gala will be held on October 20th at the Laguna Cliffs Marriott. We hope you can join us for this great cause.
If you are looking for a terrific spot for your child, whether it is for every day after school, or just for a few days here and there, the Club is your spot!
