San Clemente’s Surf Gidget Makes Waves for Charity

Surf Gidget The Pug catches waves for those in need. This Champion surfer has landed sponsors and product placement with such companies as SONY, SJCAM, California Board Company, INT Surfboards, Airhead SUP “Ambassador”, Speak Pug, EZY DOG USA, Natural Dog Company, Scribble Pug and a new sponsor on board, Dog Beach Style who is now developing a product line for pugs called “Splash” Gidget Inspired, Pug Approved!

If you have been lucky enough to see Surf Gidget (Gidget) The Pug in action you’re not likely to forget it. This rare, white, purebred pug originates from Maine and now calls Southern California her home. This surf pug wears a bright pink wetsuit, life jacket and rides a custom pink surfboard and is now known as “the pug in pink”. She does more than create fun memories for fans; she’s also fundraising for children and animals in need while surfing or attending charity events.

Alecia Nelson who specializes in dog training and who owns It’s A Dogs Life Academy ItsADogsLifeAcademy.com in San Clemente, offers dog training, dog daycare, dog adventures, VIP Pet Boarding and a shuttle service. Nelson noticed right away Surf Gidget demonstrated an amazing sense of balance. Therefore, Nelson started to train the pup in exercises.

“I was going to have her compete in agility contests through the AKC (American Kennel Club),” Nelson says.

However, the dog’s career path took a detour after Nelson, 25-year Fitness professional and avid paddle boarder, introduced her to water. Nelson told her dog that since she has was already agile that she must be able to balance on a paddle board. And balance came easily for the pug riding the oceans in Maine. After spending four years in Maine for business and Gidget’s first 2 years of puppy life paddling the waters in Maine, Nelson moved her business back to San Clemente, CA. Nelson decided to have Gidget try out the professional surfing world, which proved to be the right move. In addition to helping animal non-profits, Gidget’s team is looking into supporting more children and military non-profits for 2018.

Beyond her fundraising efforts and trophy-filled room, Gidget has been seen on the Hallmark Channel, hanging at the SLO Film Festival, walking the red carpet pre ESPY & Emmy’s show, featured in Malibu Magazine, Modern Luxury Magazine and helped teach Cesar Milan’s son Andre this spring how to surf his pug, Sugar, riding waves for Nat Geo Wild. And her upcoming celeb status has allowed Gidget to meet some of her two-legged idols including pro surfers and celebs Mick Fanning, Kelly Slater, Bede Durbidge, Belinda Carlisle “Go-Go’s”, Jeff Bridges and Josh Brolin, to name the few. Gidget’s team is also working on a pug clothing line, accessories and a children’s book on her website, SurfGidget.com with a percentage of each sale going to a charity.

When Gidget isn’t hanging 20, doing charity work or in front of the camera, she enjoys her pampered pooch perks with a squeaky toy, healthy food and treats, eating carrots and broccoli and catching frisbees and balls at the beach. Gidget’s future plans: to always help those in need and have a spot on a tv show about a humorous pug with a smile and a big heart who can do just about anything!
