“I celebrate myself, and what I assume you shall assume,
For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you.
I loafe and invite my Soul, I lean and loafe at my ease … observing a spear of summer grass.”
– Walt Whitman
A Soul Surfer if there ever was one, is none other than Henry Ford. When this California legend started surfing Hermosa back in the 1950’s, his mentors were Hoppy Swartz, the Meistrell brothers and Leroy Grannis. During the era of surf clubs, Ford was also a regular at Malibu during the summers along with surfing legend’s Terry Tracey, Mike Doyle, Mickey Dora, Johnny Fain, Mickey Munoz, and Gidget herself. Amazingly enough, to this day, Ford still charges with the same stoke that now goes back some 70 yrs! And he still knows Gidget!
We thoroughly enjoyed spending time with Ford. Chatting with him about the history of Surf was music to our ears. Speaking of music, San Clemente’s own ‘Tunnel Vision’ is Rock’n the USA. We had a chance to say hello and get some of their thoughts on San Clemente, and what it was like to charge it in Africa, some 19,341 ft above sea level!
Happy August San Clemente!
